What your child will learn
Dividing whole numbers
- Long DivisionDivide multi-digit numbers with the standard long division algorithm.
- Long Division with Two-Digit DivisorsDivide by a two-digit divisor with long division, estimating each digit of the quotient.
- Remainders as DecimalsContinue long division past the decimal point to write a quotient as a decimal instead of a remainder.
- Dividing Whole Numbers Review ReviewReview long division with multi-digit numbers.
Decimal operations
- Adding and Subtracting DecimalsAdd and subtract multi-digit decimals with the standard algorithm by lining up place values.
- Multiplying DecimalsMultiply multi-digit decimals with the standard algorithm and place the decimal point.
- Dividing by a DecimalDivide by a decimal by multiplying the divisor and dividend by the same power of ten to make a whole-number divisor.
- Decimal Operations Review ReviewReview adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals.
Factors and multiples
- Greatest Common FactorFind the greatest common factor of two whole numbers up to one hundred.
- Least Common MultipleFind the least common multiple of two whole numbers up to twelve.
- Using the Distributive PropertyRewrite a sum like thirty-six plus eight as four times the sum of nine and two using a common factor.
- Factors and Multiples Review ReviewReview greatest common factor, least common multiple and factoring out a common factor.
- Unit 5 Test: Working with Decimals and Whole NumbersShow what you learned in the whole unit (Dividing whole numbers, Decimal operations, Factors and multiples) by answering mixed questions.
Try a question from this unit
From the lesson “Long Division”
A community garden harvests 2,345 potatoes and shares them equally among 5 food pantries. How many potatoes does each pantry get?
Show the answer
469 potatoes. First, 23 ÷ 5 = 4 R 3. Next, 34 ÷ 5 = 6 R 4, and then 45 ÷ 5 = 9, so the answer is 469. The answer 49 skips a round, and 5 × 49 is only 245.
Hint kids see after a wrong try: “The divisor does not fit into the first digit, so start with the first two digits. Then keep repeating the four moves.”
