What your child will learn
Positive and negative numbers
- Negative Numbers in Real LifeUse positive and negative numbers to describe opposite amounts like temperature above and below zero or money earned and spent.
- Numbers on a Number LinePlace positive and negative integers and rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line.
- OppositesExplain that opposite numbers are the same distance from zero on opposite sides, and that the opposite of the opposite is the number itself.
- Positive and Negative Numbers Review ReviewReview positive and negative numbers on the number line.
Ordering and absolute value
- Comparing Signed NumbersCompare positive and negative numbers by where they sit on a number line and write inequalities like negative three is greater than negative seven.
- Absolute ValueFind the absolute value of a number as its distance from zero.
- Absolute Value and MagnitudeUse absolute value to describe size in context, like a debt of thirty dollars, and tell apart comparing absolute values from comparing numbers.
- Ordering and Absolute Value Review ReviewReview ordering rational numbers and absolute value.
Inequalities
- Writing InequalitiesWrite an inequality like x is greater than ten for a real-world limit, like needing to be taller than a certain height.
- Graphing InequalitiesShow the solutions of an inequality on a number line using open and closed circles.
- Solutions to InequalitiesTest values to decide whether they make an inequality true and explain that there are infinitely many solutions.
- Inequalities Review ReviewReview writing, graphing and testing inequalities.
The four-quadrant coordinate plane
- Four QuadrantsPlot points with positive and negative coordinates in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane.
- Reflections Across the AxesExplain that changing the sign of a coordinate reflects a point across an axis.
- Distances on the Coordinate PlaneFind the distance between two points with the same first or second coordinate using absolute value.
- Polygons on the Coordinate PlaneDraw polygons from vertex coordinates and find side lengths, perimeter and area.
- The Four-Quadrant Coordinate Plane: Review ReviewReview graphing in all four quadrants and finding distances.
- Unit 7 Test: Rational NumbersShow what you learned in the whole unit (Positive and negative numbers, Ordering and absolute value, Inequalities, The four-quadrant coordinate plane) by answering mixed questions.

From the lesson “Negative Numbers in Real Life”
A turtle dives 12 feet below the surface of a lake. The surface is zero. Which number describes where the turtle is?
Show the answer
-12. Below the surface is the negative side, and the turtle is 12 feet from zero, so its position is -12. The answer 12 has the right distance but points the other way, above the water.
Hint kids see after a wrong try: “Decide which side of zero the word 'below' puts the turtle on.”
