What your child will learn

What are ratios?

  1. Ratio Language: 'For Every' and 'To'Describe a ratio between two quantities using words like for every and to, as in three cups of flour for every two cups of milk.
  2. Part-to-Part and Part-to-Whole RatiosTell apart a ratio that compares two parts from a ratio that compares a part to the whole.
  3. Equivalent RatiosMake equivalent ratios by multiplying or dividing both quantities by the same number, like doubling a recipe.
  4. What Are Ratios? Review ReviewReview ratio language and equivalent ratios.

Ratio tables and diagrams

  1. Double Number LinesUse a double number line to find equivalent ratios and missing values.
  2. Ratio TablesFill in a ratio table by adding, multiplying or dividing rows to solve a problem.
  3. Tape Diagrams for RatiosSolve a ratio problem where the total is known, like sharing money in a two to three ratio, using a tape diagram.
  4. Comparing RatiosDecide which of two mixtures has a stronger taste by comparing equivalent ratios.
  5. Ratio Tables and Diagrams Review ReviewReview ratio tables, double number lines and tape diagrams.
  6. Unit 2 test: Introducing RatiosShow what you learned in the whole unit (What are ratios?, Ratio tables and diagrams) by answering mixed questions.

Try a question from this unit

From the lesson “Ratio Language: 'For Every' and 'To'”

A mosaic of eleven square tiles in two rows: seven orange and four yellow, with a key for orange and yellow.

The diagram shows the tiles in a small mosaic. What is the ratio of yellow tiles to orange tiles?

  • 7 to 4
  • 4 to 11
  • 4 to 7
  • 11 to 4
Show the answer

4 to 7. There are 4 yellow tiles and 7 orange tiles, and yellow is named first, so the ratio is 4 to 7. The answer 7 to 4 has the right numbers in the reverse order, which would be orange to yellow.

Hint kids see after a wrong try: “Count each color. Then check which color the question names first.”
