What your child will learn

Volume of cylinders, cones and spheres

  1. Volume of CylindersFind the volume of a cylinder by multiplying the area of its circular base by its height.
  2. Volume of ConesFind the volume of a cone as one third of the volume of a cylinder with the same base and height.
  3. Volume of SpheresFind the volume of a sphere using four thirds times pi times the radius cubed.
  4. Volume Word ProblemsSolve real-world problems with cylinders, cones and spheres, like filling a cup or a ball.
  5. Review: Cylinders, Cones and Spheres ReviewReview the volume formulas for cylinders, cones and spheres and using them in problems.
  6. Unit 7 Test: VolumeShow what you learned in the whole unit (Volume of cylinders, cones and spheres) by answering mixed questions.

Try a question from this unit

From the lesson “Volume of Cylinders”

A cylinder with radius 2 in and height 5 in.

What is the volume of this cylinder? Use 3.14 for pi.

  • 62.8 cubic inches
  • 31.4 cubic inches
  • 251.2 cubic inches
  • 20 cubic inches
Show the answer

62.8 cubic inches. The base area is 3.14 times 2 times 2, which is 12.56 square inches, and 12.56 times 5 is 62.8 cubic inches. The answer 31.4 forgets to square the radius.

Hint kids see after a wrong try: “Find the area of the circular base first. Then think about how many layers of that circle are stacked up.”
