What your child will learn

The Pythagorean theorem

  1. Explaining the Pythagorean TheoremExplain a picture proof that a squared plus b squared equals c squared in a right triangle.
  2. The Converse of the Pythagorean TheoremUse the converse to decide whether three side lengths make a right triangle.
  3. Finding the HypotenuseFind the length of the hypotenuse when you know both legs.
  4. Finding a Missing LegFind the length of a missing leg when you know the hypotenuse and the other leg.
  5. The Pythagorean Theorem Review ReviewReview the Pythagorean theorem, its converse and finding missing sides.

Using the Pythagorean theorem

  1. Pythagorean Theorem Word ProblemsSolve real-world problems like ladder and screen size problems with the Pythagorean theorem.
  2. Diagonals in Three DimensionsFind the length of the diagonal inside a box using the Pythagorean theorem twice.
  3. Distance on the Coordinate PlaneFind the distance between two points by drawing a right triangle and using the Pythagorean theorem.
  4. Using the Pythagorean Theorem: Review ReviewReview real-world Pythagorean problems, three-dimensional diagonals and distance between points.
  5. Unit 6 Test: The Pythagorean TheoremShow what you learned in the whole unit (The Pythagorean theorem, Using the Pythagorean theorem) by answering mixed questions.

Try a question from this unit

From the lesson “Explaining the Pythagorean Theorem”

A turned right triangle with its right angle at the top; sides r and s meet at the right angle and side t runs along the bottom.

Look at the right triangle. Which side is the hypotenuse?

  • side r
  • side s
  • side t
  • It depends on how the triangle is turned.
Show the answer

side t. The hypotenuse is the side across from the right angle, and here that is side t, which is also the longest side. Sides r and s form the right angle, so they are the legs, even though the triangle is turned.

Hint kids see after a wrong try: “Find the square corner first. Which side does not touch it?”
