What your child will learn

Earth's natural hazards

  1. When the Ground Shakes: EarthquakesDescribe what happens during an earthquake and why it can be dangerous.
  2. Mountains of Melted Rock: VolcanoesExplain how volcanic eruptions can harm people and change the land.
  3. Waves from the Sea Floor: TsunamisDescribe how an undersea earthquake can cause a tsunami.
  4. Too Much Rain: Floods and LandslidesExplain how heavy rain can cause floods and landslides.
  5. Review: Earth's Natural Hazards ReviewReview the natural hazards caused by Earth's processes and how they affect people.

Engineering against hazards

  1. Buildings That Stand StrongDescribe how engineers design buildings to withstand earthquake shaking.
  2. Sensors That Sound the AlarmExplain how sensors and alarms warn people about volcanoes and tsunamis.
  3. Keeping Homes DryCompare solutions such as levees and raised houses for reducing flood damage.
  4. Is It a Fair Test?Plan a fair test with controlled variables to find which design works best.
  5. Engineers to the Rescue: Review ReviewReview how engineers design, compare and test solutions that reduce damage from natural hazards.
  6. Unit 7 Test: Natural HazardsShow what you learned in the whole unit (Earth's natural hazards, Engineering against hazards) by answering mixed questions.

Try a question from this unit

From the lesson “When the Ground Shakes: Earthquakes”

What makes an earthquake happen?

  • Strong winds blowing over the land
  • Plates that suddenly slip past each other
  • Heavy rain soaking into the ground
  • The Moon pulling on the ocean
Show the answer

Plates that suddenly slip past each other. Plate edges get stuck and pressure builds up. When the rocks suddenly slip, the ground shakes.

Hint kids see after a wrong try: “Think about the giant pieces of Earth's outer layer and what happens when their edges get stuck.”
