What your child will learn

Equivalent expressions

  1. Combining Like TermsSimplify expressions like three x plus two minus x plus five by combining like terms.
  2. Using the Distributive PropertyExpand expressions like negative two times the quantity x minus four using the distributive property.
  3. Factoring ExpressionsFactor expressions like six x plus nine into three times the quantity two x plus three.
  4. Rewriting Expressions to Show MeaningRewrite an expression in a different form, like a plus five hundredths a as one and five hundredths a, to show what it means in a problem.
  5. Equivalent Expressions Review ReviewReview combining like terms, the distributive property, factoring and rewriting expressions.

Two-step equations

  1. Keeping Equations BalancedUse the idea of a balance to explain why you must do the same thing to both sides of an equation.
  2. Solving Equations Like px + q = rSolve two-step equations like three x plus five equals twenty by undoing operations in reverse order.
  3. Solving Equations Like p(x + q) = rSolve equations like two times the quantity x plus three equals sixteen by dividing first or distributing first.
  4. Two-Step Equation Word ProblemsWrite and solve a two-step equation for a word problem and check that the answer makes sense.
  5. Two-Step Equations Review ReviewReview solving two-step equations and using them for word problems.

Inequalities

  1. Writing InequalitiesWrite inequalities using words like at least, at most, more than and less than.
  2. Solving Two-Step InequalitiesSolve inequalities like two x plus three is greater than eleven using inverse operations.
  3. Flipping the Inequality SignExplain why the inequality sign flips when you multiply or divide both sides by a negative number.
  4. Graphing and Interpreting SolutionsGraph the solutions of an inequality on a number line and explain what they mean in a word problem.
  5. Inequalities Review ReviewReview writing, solving and graphing inequalities, including flipping the sign.

Solving multi-step problems

  1. Switching Between Fractions, Decimals and PercentsChange numbers between fraction, decimal and percent forms to make a problem easier to solve.
  2. Estimating to Check AnswersUse rounding and mental math to estimate an answer and decide if a calculated answer is reasonable.
  3. Solving Real-World Multi-Step ProblemsSolve multi-step problems that mix whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percents.
  4. Solving Multi-Step Problems: Review ReviewReview converting between number forms, estimating and solving multi-step problems.
  5. Unit 2 Test: Expressions and EquationsShow what you learned in the whole unit (Equivalent expressions, Two-step equations, Inequalities, Solving multi-step problems) by answering mixed questions.

Try a question from this unit

From the lesson “Combining Like Terms”

Simplify 5x + 3 + 2x.

  • 10x
  • 7x + 3
  • 10x + 3
  • 5x + 5
Show the answer

7x + 3. The like terms 5x and 2x combine to 7x, and the constant 3 has no partner, so the result is 7x + 3. The answer 10x adds a constant to x-terms, which are different kinds of terms.

Hint kids see after a wrong try: “Only terms with the same variable part can be put together. Find the terms that have an x, and leave the others alone.”
